Galvanized Planters Will Help Extend Your Garden – Organic Gardening Articles
Container gardening is often an attractive choice for those with small gardens, patio gardens or not much soil. There are some plants and herbs that we all love to grow, but find difficult to plant in the garden; because they are invasive, such as mint, or sun-loving and need moving around the garden, or the soil is alkaline and you want to grow some acid loving plants. Using a planter is the answer but choosing the right planter is important. You need a container that will protect your plants, give them sufficient room to grow and is attractive at the same time. Galvanized planters are one option and are available from a lot of different outlets.
Types of planters
The choice of planters falls into three categories; plastic planters, terracotta planters and galvanized planters. Plastic planters are cheap, and available in different colors, but they fade in the sun, are liable to crack after several frosts, and are not very sturdy for large, heavy plants. Terracotta is very attractive, but heavy, and gives a cottage garden look, but again they tend to crack after a couple of heavy frosts, the edges splinter, and the terracotta fractures. They are also very porous, which means they lose a lot of water, and they will need to be lined, and plants watered frequently. Galvanized planters are made from steel galvanized zinc which is frost resistant. They are also rust resistant, reasonably lightweight but strong and available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.
Styles of galvanized planters
You can buy galvanized planters in red, blue, yellow, or green to add some zing to your garden. Round galvanized pots are great for single specimen items, such as an olive tree; rectangular planters are ideal for window boxes, and for a more ornate effect, look at metal planters with scroll work, and etchings. Herbs are ideal for planting in planters as they can be moved around to find the sun, and then placed close to the kitchen for use in cooking. If you are interested in organic gardening then buy a few of the large galvanized planters with handles and try your hand at growing some vegetables organically. You can put small window box planters for your herbs, tall, square planters for plants with deep roots, troughs in polished steel finish that look great grouped together; the choice of galvanized planters is endless. Happy planting with galvanized planters!
